Corrosion Inhibitors
Corrosion inhibitors for steel reinforcement embedded in concrete are used to significantly reduce or delay the onset or rate of corrosion on the steel surface.

This technology has actually been in use for many years in other industries including inside boilers and heating systems to prevent corrosion from the inside, plus in the packaging of electronic and machinery components that need to be protected against corrosion during transport and storage before they are installed.

Since the 1980's this technology has gradually been rolled out and accepted as also being able to make a valuable contribution in concrete repair works. Specifically this is where surface applied grades of a corrosion inhibitor such as Sika FerroGard-903, will difuse and migrate through the concrete capillaries to the embedded steel surface, and then form a protective layer around the steel, even when the concrete has lost its passivating alkalinity due to atmospheric carbonation, or when the surface has been exposed to aggressive chlorides, such as from de-icing salts.

Sika FerroGard-903+

Sika FerroGard-903+ is a surface applied mixed corrosion inhibitor, designed for use as an impregnation of steel reinforced concrete and is an improved formulation of the original Sika FerroGard-903. Sika FerroGard-903+ is based on organic compounds that penetrate the concrete and form a protective monomolecular layer on the surface of the reinforcing steel.

Protection with Sika FerroGard-903+ both delays the start of corrosion and reduces the corrosion rate. Corrosion protection with Sika FerroGard-903+ therefore increases the service and maintenance life cycles by up to 15 years when used as a part of a complete Sika Concrete Repair and Protection System, prior to overcoating with a Sika Protective coating such as Sikagard 550W Elastic.

Sika FerroGard-903+ is used for the corrosion protection of many different types of steel reinforced concrete structures, where the reinforcing steel is corroding, or is at risk from corrosion due to the effects of carbonation or chloride contaminated concrete

Sika Ferrogard-903+ is particulalry suitable for extending the service life of fair-faced concrete surfaces on important buildings and structures with difficult or expensive access.

Sika Ferrogard-903+ complies with Principle 11 of European Standard EN 1504-9, Method 11.3 Applying inhibitor to the concrete.

Sika Ferrogard-903+ does not change the appearance of the concrete structure, it does not alter the water vapour diffusion properties of concrete and provides significant additional long term protection and durability. It can be applied to the surface of existing repairs and to surrounding areas to prevent the development of incipient anodes as it protects both the cathodic (Principle 9) and anodic (Principle 11) zones of the steel reinforcement surfaces.
